Still, the number of COVID-related deaths in Colombia falls below that of Mexico, Argentina and Peru. Nonetheless, the pace of infections inched higher in December 2020 in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/world\/articles\/2021-01-05\/colombia-brings-back-lockdowns-as-coronavirus-cases-rise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second wave <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that was fueled by holiday gatherings, triggering a new set of restrictions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With COVID-19 vaccinations set to begin in Colombia in February, the country\u2019s population is growing tired of the lockdown measures that remain in place. While Colombians may face limitations to their freedoms in their day-to-day lives, the country\u2019s borders are open to travel though not without some restrictions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is kind of a big deal considering that Columbia had some of the most severe travel bans in place across the Americas in the early days of the virus. The airlines in the country, such as Spirit, eased back into their schedules in an attempt to capture the demand from South Florida travelers who frequently made the trip between the locations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/colombia.travel\/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colombia.travel\/en<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to Expect When Traveling to Colombia\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traveling to Colombia is a bit of a fluid situation, as tourism is for many countries around the world due to the latest COVID developments. Land and water borders, however, are closed until March 1 or later. As of January 2021, commercial flights are running in and out of Colombia, albeit on a limited basis, to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/co.usembassy.gov\/covid-19-information\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following airports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bogota\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cartagena\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medell\u00edn (Rionegro)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cali\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barranquilla<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armenia\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pereira<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bucaramanga<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One exception is the U.K., where a new and more contagious strain of COVID is making the rounds. The travel restrictions are working both ways. On one hand, Colombia is not allowing travelers to enter the country whose trip began in the U.K. Meanwhile, the U.K. has placed a blanket ban on travelers from South America, including Colombia, with the exception of residents and nationals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.K. is worried about what is known as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/01\/19\/958472446\/scientists-worry-about-coronavirus-variant-spreading-in-brazil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazilian variant <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that has begun to rapidly spread in the city of Manaus.\u00a0 One microbiologist from the University of Cambridge fears the strain could make it easier for people to catch the virus twice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from those exceptions, travelers entering Colombia should be prepared to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/colombia.travel\/en\/covid-19-information\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take some steps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ahead of their trip.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International travelers should take a COVID-19 PCR test within four days of the flight. If you bring evidence of a negative test, you won\u2019t need to be quarantined.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Complete a Check-Mig form on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co\/pre-registro\/public\/preregistro.jsf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migracion Colombia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> website so you can enter and leave the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep your mask and any other protective gear on while traveling.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get tested upon arrival in Colombia if you were unable to get tested before your trip. In this case, you will have to stay in lockdown until the test results are complete and come back negative. Without a test, you\u2019ll have to stay in lockdown for 14 days.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source:<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/centreforaviation.com\/analysis\/reports\/colombia-reopens-will-air-travel-demand-materialise-535728\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Centerforaviation.com\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel and the Economy\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colombia experienced a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americasquarterly.org\/article\/how-tourism-can-jumpstart-colombias-economy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">300% surge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in foreign visitors in the 13 years leading up to 2019. When the pandemic hit, Colombia\u2019s travel industry got caught in the crosshairs. The country\u2019s travel industry has suffered a one-two punch of decreasing international and domestic demand in addition to having a lack of support by the government. Since the pandemic hit, hotel occupancy rates plunged below 3%, with about 235,000 jobs hanging in the balance\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The travel and tourism sector contributes roughly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.selectusa.gov\/article?id=Colombia-Travel-and-Tourism#:~:text=The%20Travel%20and%20Tourism%20market,exchange%20behind%20oil%20and%20coal.&amp;text=The%20country%20received%20more%20than,million%20foreign%20visitors%20in%202017.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.8%, or USD 19 billion, to Colombia\u2019s GDP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Losing the travel sector\u2019s contribution to Colombia\u2019s developing economy would be catastrophic, according to Sergio Guzm\u00e1n, a political risk analyst.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guzman<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semana.com\/opinion\/columnistas\/articulo\/columna-de-sergio-guzman-la-agonizante-industria-del-turismo\/289039\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in an op-ed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points out that the tourism industry was responsible for approximately 10% of the global workforce in 2019, or 330 million jobs, as per the World Travel and Tourism Council. Some 25% of new jobs added that year were in the tourism industry. And while the toll that the pandemic has taken on the industry remains unclear, estimates suggest that travel revenues have shrunk by 30%, which places some 300 million jobs at risk of elimination globally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colombia has not been immune to this dynamic, but the reactivation of flights is already starting to pay off. In the early days of 2021, nearly two-thirds of passenger traffic on domestic flights has resumed vs. the same period last year, while almost 40% of passenger traffic has returned on international flights. In order for industry recovery to continue, however, the country must avoid further travel bans and instead up its game with \u201cbiosecurity and self-care measures,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/anato.org\/noticias\/con-una-reactivacion-del-55-en-el-transito-de-pasajeros-en-vuelos-nacionales-e-internacionales-arranca-el-turismo-en-2021-para-colombia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colombian Experience\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who decide to travel to Colombia will have to adhere to some restrictions. The capital city of Bogota, for instance, which has a population of 7.5 million, has implemented a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/world\/articles\/2021-01-18\/colombias-capital-bogota-extends-nightly-curfew-to-curb-coronavirus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nightly curfew<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through January 28 by which people must remain inside between the hours of 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. Restaurants are only running at 25% capacity, but outside dining has become more prevalent, which increases a traveler\u2019s chances of being able to dine out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is there are no intercity or interstate restrictions stopping anyone. With coasts on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, travelers have a unique opportunity to experience both white sandy beaches and mountainous terrain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/travel\/places-to-visit-vacation.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Colombia is one of the top 52 destinations \u201cto love in 2021.\u201d But the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not feature the country\u2019s most popular destinations, such as Bogota or Medell\u00edn. Instead, Samuel Dulik, a consultant, highlights the beauty of the Llanos, where he says \u201cyou can kiss your cell service goodbye.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dulik points out that Colombia has been attracting more international visitors of late, though the Llanos have yet to become a hot spot. It may not be long, however, before these grasslands become known not for the violence and drug trafficking that plagued the region in recent decades but instead for what is increasingly evolving into a \u201cplace of tranquility,\u201d as Dulik puts it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before COVID hit, Colombia was in the process of redefining itself as a tourist destination. While cities like Medell\u00edn have been plagued by violence and unrest, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/from-narcos-danger-zone-to-rising-tourist-star-colombias-medellin-11556123510\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as of 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the tide had begun to turn. Travelers were made to feel welcome to experience features such as the year-round mild temperatures that the city has to offer.
